Kicking It

Kicking it post

Her dream was to combine her martial arts skills with a blog and teach others how to be safe. With this blog, she is doing just that.

Although this blog is new, the author is no stranger to blogosphere. She blogged for awhile, then went on hiatus. Now she’s back, writing about that which ignites her passion – teaching her audience ways to react in situations we may not have planned for.

In her post titled, Self Defense With Heel Palm Strike she shares a technique that could buy us some time if we encounter an attacker. This basic karate move could,

* Painfully slam the lower teeth into the upper teeth
* Stun a person for a few moments
* Put a person off balance enough to fall backwards
* Knock someone out completely from the impact of the strike
* Make a stunned attacker fall and knock themselves out when they hit the ground with their head

Ouch! That sounds like it would hurt, doesn’t it? The post shares the entire lesson.

Road rage is another situation we don’t plan for. Although some have experienced it, the majority of us wouldn’t know what to do. In No One Wants This Kind Of Relationship she shares why some people feel a need to confront others.

Criminal violence is a relationship. It’s a sucky relationship, to be sure, but the target’s voluntary participation is not required. The bad guys grab control, forcing their will on another so they can quench their need for sadism, manipulation, venting, power, or fulfilled entitlement.

In this article she shares suggestions for how you can react if you find yourself in this position.

In life we meet all kinds of people and her post titled Defense Against the Dark Hearts begins with a description of what “dark hearts” are.

* Friends who frequently sap you of energy
* Co-workers who make your life miserable
* Family who drive you crazy with silly arguments
* Teachers who make you always feel insignificant
* Bosses who make you feel like you have to walk on eggshells around them

I don’t know about you, but I’ve known a dark heart, or two. When she goes on to tell her readers why some act the way they do and how to deal with them, you’ll gain a better perspective on what to do and how to protect yourself from being intimidated or caught up in their web of deception.

With physical, mental and emotional self defense being the topic of this blog, for those who care about their own safety plus the safety of their children, this blog is a “subscription must”.

Many of you have seen her on your blog. Some have seen her here. She can also be found on Twitter.

Without further ado, I’d like to re-introduce Lori Hoeck, third degree black belt, senior martial arts instructor and author of Think Like a Black Belt.

Please join me in re-welcoming Lori to the Blogging Without A Blog community.

Welcome again, Lori.

It’s a joy to have you blogging again. I look forward to all of your future posts on a blog that’s sure to be a huge success.

~Barbara.

  1. Hi Barbara… and hi Lori. It’s great of Barbara to give your new blog a “kick-start”. Welcome back.

“Defence Against the Dark Hearts” — love this play on words (of course I’m also a Harry Potter fan — that helps). This is one post I want to read. Guess where I’m headed now? :~) Thanks Barbara.

  2. Hi Barbara and Lori – I said to myself, “Now THAT’S a niche!” As I read further, I realized Lori has a unique and finely tuned perspective on defense – physical and emotional. This was powerful: Instead, view the attacker as trying to force a relationship on you that will have a beginning, middle, and end. Words to live by whether the attacker is the physical or emotional sort.

Her description of narcissists is right on the money, too! Lori, you’re coming out strong! And Barbara, this pick is awesome. Thank you for bringing Lori into the spotlight.

  3. Hi Barbara,
Thank you for what Davina calls my new blog kick start. And what a way to kick it off — thank you for the kind words and the caring community you have around you!

    Hi Davina,
A Harry Potter fan, yes! Thank you for the welcome back and comments here and at my site.

    Hi Paisley,
As a martial arts instructor, I’ve taught students who come in for physical self defense when they need just as much mental or emotional self defense. Great thing about having a handle on all types of defense is that you can better avoid any bad guy’s radar.

    Hi Betsy,
Thank you for your feedback and comments. My plan is to keep my posts potent or “kickin’ ” because that will make them more usable to readers, thus keeping them safer. And a big hope of mine is they teach it to their kids!

  5. Nice choice Barbara.

    Welcome Lori!

I especially like the Dark Hearts points and I like your choice set for confrontation … “Choose to comply, defuse, escape, defy, or fight.”

  7. Hi Writer Dad,
Thank you for your kickin’ support and kind words! The ebook — soon to be published — will be a powerful option for those who need to immediately jump start their own self defense or the self defense education of their children.

    Hi J.D.,
Thank you for the feedback on the posts. I like to think of self defense as being all about choices — yours instead of the bad guy’s.

    Hi Positively Present,
Please do! Thank you for your enthusiasm.

It would be nice to learn from someone who is a karate master.

Caroline´s last blog post..Wow…I said that?

  12. I think mental and emotional self defense should be offered at the same time as physical!

  13. Hi Caroline,
Thank you for the “winner” description for my blog. I just visited yours — it’s beautiful! Your background is relaxing and inviting.

  14. Hi Tess,
Sad to say it’s needed, yes, and I had to learn some of it the hard way myself, but now I can pass it on — in a Bold Life kind of way. Thank you.

  15. Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for re-welcoming Lori to Blogging Without A Blog and to blogosphere. When she left, I missed her writing, but I think you’ll all agree with me, she’s come back kickin’ it.

    Lori,

It’s such a pleasure to have the honor to showcase your brand new blog. Just from reading the first four posts, I know it’s going to be a major hit. You pack in the information, eliminate the fluff and get right down to the message. (Just like your book) . It doesn’t get any better than that.

    Enjoy your reign. 🙂

  16. The photo is a lovely one!! I just used it last week on my Warrior post…LOL!! I have never learned any form of self defense but can see how useful it can be. Thanks for the introduction to Lori’s site!

  17. Barbara,

Thank you and your readers for such a warm welcome! I had no idea when I closed shop at my last blog, I could have said, “I’ll be back” Schwarzenegger style.

Had to smile at the “enjoy your reign” line. If you and other goodhearted bloggers have taught me anything, it is engage, be courteous, and be of service, and that any sense of authority comes from the power of our words to make a difference.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. It is a fun photo, isn’t it? I don’t think I ever got quite that high in jump kick, well at least not without a trampoline!

    Hi Kathy,
A bucket list item that will hopefully come true soon! Thank you for the kind and energetic thumbs up.

    Hi Lance,
Thank you for the welcome back, Lance. I’m looking forward to it all myself!

  20. Wow I love the phrase the DARK HEARTS – yep I have known quite a few of those. I recognize Lori’s pictures must be from her other blog, and am quite excited to follow through and discover her new blog…

I made sure my 3 girls had lots of years of martial arts. A good spot and information – thank you

    Thank you Barbara

  21. Another great showcase Barbara.

I love that Lori’s about page mentions “self defense is more about a determined heart and mind than actual physical skills”. The study of learning the physical skills is an incredible method for spiritual and mental development.
