This picture reminds me of how bed hair can give us away. You know, you decide to take a quick nap, jump up because someone knocked on the door or you realize you’re now late for an appointment, and forget to comb your hair.

Sometimes it’s not pretty.

Bed hair reminds me of our blogs. From the “front” our blogs may look great. Everything is where it’s suppose to be. We’ve tested our blog in multiple browsers and it passes. We’re gaining popularity in blogosphere, built a community on our blog(s), but behind the scenes, things are disheveled.

Today’s Lesson

I have a confession. You can’t see it, but my blogs are sporting “bed hair”.

I’ve been so busy with all of the other aspects of blogging, including getting ready to unveil a new theme, I’ve neglected what’s going on behind the scenes.

After looking at my blogging to do list and the WordPress dashboards on three blogs I realized I have,

  1. 160+ drafts that need to be gone through – most will be deleted
  2. 7 comments that need to be deleted, approved or marked as spam
  3. 2 plugins that need to be updated – simply done with the click of a button
  4. Add the Automagic Twitter Profile URI plugin to the comment section – done.
  5. An upgrade to WordPress 2.7.1 – Although I use the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin, it’s still time consuming
  6. Rewrite of my “About” page – after two years of blogging, it’s time for a change
  7. Write a “comment policy” – Joanna Young’s post reminded me I should have one
  8. Take a screen shot of my current blog which I’ll use on my first post when I unveil my new theme on Monday (3/30/09) – Thank you Eric Hamm
  9. Go through my three email accounts and try to zero them out – I still question why I need three
  10. Create a “Featured Blogs” page which will list all blogs which have been showcased in my “New Blog Of The Week” series (NBOTW)
  11. Find a photo of myself to include on my “About Me” page – I’m usually the one behind the camera
  12. Review new Followers on Twitter – need to check their tweeter pages and mark them as “follow”, or not.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the list, but whomever says blogging is easy and it’s just a matter of writing and publishing failed to mention additional time is required to do blog maintenance.

Today’s Assignment

What’s on your blogging “to do” list?

How do you keep up with all there is to do? Or do you?

Do you need help with something, but don’t know where to turn? Feel free to leave your question.

I’m guessing someone in the BWAB community will know the answer.

Good Day Class

I don’t know how he found the time to do it, but I’m glad he did. Today we have Lance of “Jungle Of Life” as our substitute teacher (guest writer).

As with his own posts, Lance will get you thinking with this one as well.

Without further ado, I give you Lance.

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” ~ Rudyard Kipling

Thank you, Barbara.

Welcome to today’s class here at BWAB University.

Students, please note: Even though we are talking about snowballs, there will be NO snowball fights going on during class!

Today’s Lesson

Our words, they are indeed powerful. Today, we’ll be discussing the wide-ranging effect these words can have, and how this may or may not change how we write.

We blog.

We comment.

We share photos.

We Twitter. We Facebook. We email.

We connect via the telephone.

We meet in person.

(and probably a myriad of other ways)

The Snowball Effect: is a figurative term for a process that starts from an initial state of small significance and builds upon itself, becoming larger (graver, more serious), and perhaps potentially dangerous or disastrous (a vicious circle, a “spiral of decline”), though it might be beneficial instead (a virtuous circle). Source: Wikipedia

What we each do here on the World Wide Web has the potential to take on this snowball effect. Our words, our voices – they are not islands unto themselves. There are no walls that keep these words within a confined space. They become more like that note in a bottle, dropped into the sea. Drifting maybe to be viewed only by an island just off shore, or drifting maybe to be viewed many times the world over. And we never really know exactly where these words of ours have traveled.

Writing here on the Internet – our words can travel to faraway lands.

Our voice is heard, and our reach is wide – for each and every one of us. We can’t really tell how far our words may travel, and to whom they might touch in some significant way.

Like a snowball, growing bigger and bigger as it moves on – so too our words move on to a larger and larger group of people hearing them. Some move and grow faster than others. The point, though, is that when we put something out there on this social web, we really don’t know how large the audience base seeing that message will grow to be. Or where it may travel.

Today’s Assignment
The words we say can snowball into something greater (in a good or a bad way). And that’s in all our interactions on this web we call the Internet, a web we’ve all become a part of.

Does this thought change how or what you write?

Do you think about what you write and how it might portray you? Does it matter?

Do you care how your words might affect someone else reading them? Does that matter?

3050634141_a6c0e2532fAs I was reading the entries in the Blog Registry this blog jumped out at me. It reminded me of my first days of blogging. Remember those days? Days when you just wrote to that imaginary audience, knowing one day they would show up?

To quote this blogger, on January 28, 2009, she wrote,

My blog is very new. So new, in fact, I have less than 20 posts. :)

On my blog,…..I share the life of a Mom who is a Home Manager, with 4 tots ages 7 and under ( 3 of those in 3 years. . . ).

I share mishaps, trials, funny things that kids say and the story behind it, and encouragement for all the other weary mamas out there, whether they stay at home or not.

I started this blog to share encouragement that I may find in a book or online or in person that other moms might find encouraging as well. Inspiration to help spur on a tired super Mommy, and I’m sure stuff that is just pure entertainment for others whose life is just, well, less harry.. . lol.

I hope to see you there!

When I visited her blog, I landed on an excellent post about home schooling and why they chose that route.

I also found her Thankful Thurday posts, and heard the beautiful music she selected for her readers to listen to as they peruse her site.

Please join me in welcoming Sarah of “Awaiting The Crown”.

If you don’t have time to visit her site, or a mommy blog is not your cup of tea, consider showing her some Twitter love.

In the meantime,

Welcome Sarah!

Enjoy your reign as New Blogger Of The Week
